Analog & Digital 101

We have received many inquiries about the differences between analog and digital. Given others could express their sentiments in a manner more eloquent than we; and a picture - or in this case music - is worth a thousand words, we have provided audio samples to further communicate and enlighten on the subject.

Sadly there is no way to stream analog, so our journey shall run along the digital to analog stream, and reveal how analog used in the production process can infuse digital with its qualities. We have provided undigitized samples as a counterpoint, to further help in identifying their unique virtues.

*Audio samples are Apple Lossless encoded tracks, which while of a high quality, we have found to fall short of the original uncompressed tracks, in our experience.

Details of the Audio Journey*:

The Radka Toneff & Steve Dobrogosz track is an all digital recording from recording to mastering.

Takashi's track is a DSD recording, with likely digital mixing and mastering.

Norah Jones' Come Away With Me is an all analog recording, except for likely digital reverb.

The Miles Davis and River of Sorrow tracks are all analog recordings.

Fair Use

These samples are to be used for educational uses, and under guise of fair use, as defined by US Copyright Law.

Fair use rationale for use in section:

These are sound samples from commercial recordings. Their inclusion here is claimed as fair use because:

    * they illustrate this educational section with the differences between analog and digital.
    * they are of reduced audio quality.
    * the samples of about 30 seconds are short in relation to the duration of the recorded tracks, and could not be used as a substitute for the original commercial recordings; and
    * they are not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted sample of comparable educational value.
    * they contribute significantly in a way that cannot be duplicated by other forms of media.
    * it is believed that these samples will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original recording, as the samples are streamed and not for download, and we fully support the purchase of the original songs.

If you are the copyright holder of one of these recordings, and you feel that its use here does not fall under "fair use" please contact us for information on how to proceed in removing the particular samples.
